Snow Birdies

How did they do that? I can't imagine how the birds build their own snow bird! But there it is - out on the back deck - as clear as can be. (I swear I had nothing to do with it!) They don't even have thumbs!

Squirrel in the Snow

To continue with the squirrel theme - aren't you glad it's not like this outside any longer (or did I speak too soon?)

Squirrel in the snow
Doesn't he look cold and wet?
He's ready for spring

Whistling Nonchalantly

Heron's always look to me like some huge prehistoric flying creature. They're big, they fly rather slowly and they make it look like a lot of work. When I see one out of the corner of my eye I always suspect I've been thrown back in time which causes me to duck and hide in the bushes before it's razor sharp beak-teeth rip me to shreds, or before I'm run down by a rampaging Tyrannosaurus Rex.

Then I realize it's just a heron and I stand back up, brush off my knees, whistle nonchalantly and continue on down the road.

Green, Mossy Buttocks

The other day on our trip to a park we saw something that you don't see every day. I wrote a little haiku to go with it:

What do we have here?
Underground, sleeping ogre.
Green, mossy buttocks.

Blue Sky Thick With Geese

I was driving in to work the other day and holy flocking geese Batman! There were flocks of geese everywhere! I must have seen at least 50 separate flocks on the drive in. A lot of them were flying back north for spring, but there was a fair number that were flying east, west and south as well. They were all over.

Honking, winter is over
Spring is in the air

Footprints At My Door

I love when the birds leave their prints behind in the snow. They are so cute!

Why can't I go out?

I Get Sick Just Watching

Not too long ago we visited the State Fair. Lots to see and do. Here's a few of the things we saw:

Little sleeping chick
What better place for a nap
Than in a warm palm

Twirling overhead
dizzying, spinning, circles
I'm sick just watching

GIANT Milky Way!

This is a cake I made recently for my Mom's birthday. Not only does it look like a Milky Way, but it has many Milky Way's melted into the cake batter. It's not quite as delicious as a real Milky Way, but hey. What is?

My mouth waters just looking
Let me have a bite

Again With the Haiku?!?

Here we go again! I have some photos to share, and nothing worthwhile to say. So, I wrote a few haiku. This is what you have to look forward to for the next few days. Lucky you!

State Fair attraction-
A pile of piggies snoozing.
Ears, hooves, snouts, oink, stink!

Is that a poodle?
A giant, puff-headed dog?
Or just a llama?

(Just because I write haiku it doesn't mean they have to be good haiku!)

How's It Goin' Boys?

And for the last photo from our recent outing (I can hear you sighing in relief):

And in celebration of the end of this particular set of posts, I've written a silly haiku:

Leaning back so cool
A sultry pose for a tree
How's it goin' boys?

Spiny Little Spiders or Fairy Nests? You Decide!

During a recent outing we came across this sweet gum tree. I'd never seen one before and found the prickly little seed pods intriguing and fascinating. They littered the ground and hung from the trees like spiny little spiders.

Dark and dangerous
Like spiny thorny spiders
Seeds ensconced inside

Full of trails and darkened paths

I Can't Think of a Good Title For This One. Make Up Your Own.

Here is the first of some pictures from a recent outing:

Roots, bark, earth, leaves, breeze and sun.
Why not dance within?

Pluck a Buttercup

Do you remember picking buttercups when you were a kid? You'd hold them under your chin and if the reflecting color turned your chin yellow that meant you liked butter. Well, here's a cool article explaining why buttercups are so good at shining that yellow light on your chin:

http://www.wired.co.uk/news/archive/2011-12/14/buttercup-physics-figured-out

Interesting. And buttercups are so happy. How can you not be happy when you hold that much yellow? They are bright, sunny and cheerful. I snapped a few pictures of buttercups recently and wrote a few haiku to go with them:

Pluck a buttercup
Mirror yellow on my chin
Yes, I like butter

---------

Tiny yellow suns
I can hold them in my hands
Bright yellow beauty

--------

Playful, yellow, fun
Buttercups sway in the breeze
Come and play with me.

All the Daisies

The other day at the park Snickers picked me a few daisies. Not to be outdone, Doodlebug picked me all the daisies.

I brought the entire pile home and they are very happy in a bowl. Maybe not as happy as they would be attached to their stems in the park, but sometimes you have to let overflowing love and sibling rivalry win out.

They are quite pretty. The underside of the petals have deep pink tips. In their honor and to appreciate the sacrifice they made, here are some haiku:

Covering the field
Delicate pink-tipped petals
A blanket of white

Plucked by small fingers
Tiny flowers shared with love
A bouquet of white

Note: Yes, I know. All my pictures are sideways and upside down. It's not me. I swear. Blogger is acting all flaky tonight and is rotating my pictures. I spent way way way way too much time trying to get them to upload right, but to no avail. So, it is what it is. Deal with it!
