What's For Breakfast Today? Donkey Flakes!

Sometimes (like once a day) I come up with a crazy idea. Now, not crazy as in driving 150 miles an hour along the edge of a rocky precipice, or crazy involving weapons and explosives. Not even crazy as in running naked down the street. A more boring kind of crazy. More along the lines of 'why in the world would she waste her time doing that?' kind of crazy. Case in point:

Now, what on earth would make me want to spend hours making this? I have no idea! It seemed like a good idea. Fun. You know, just one of those things. You do things like this too, don't you?

And the ducklings and the hubster keep asking me what gave me the idea. I can't remember. All I remember is that Snickers and I were talking. I don't remember if we were discussing tomorrow's breakfast, or if we were discussing donkeys. Either is equally likely. For all I know we were discussing things that have multiple words associated with them - like donkeys and asses. In any case, somehow I ended up suggesting that he have Donkey Flakes for breakfast. With milk. The conversation undoubtedly involved giggling and eye-rolling. And it planted the seeds.

On a related note, I firmly believe that time you enjoy wasting, is not time wasted*.

* unless, of course, it involves TV, or Facebook. then it may well be wasted.

Re-Tucking, Itchy Noses and Windy Nights

So, I've really been slacking lately with this whole blog thing haven't I? For my (few) loyal readers I apologize. For the rest of you who don't read this blog, what are you waiting for? Get with it!

In any case, I've been busy. Busy with all sorts of things. What sorts of things you ask? I have no idea! I never seem to get anything accomplished, yet I never have time for anything. But I guess that's just the way of things, isn't it?

One thing I've been doing is trying to squeeze in a little bit of web development again. It really is amazing how much web development I can get done in 10 minute chunks (almost none, but for 10 minutes that 'almost' is what counts!) When the kids are 'supposed to be' in bed, but really aren't - at any given time one or more of them are (choose any two):

A) giggling
B) lonely
C) scared
D) arguing
E) need a drink (oh, so do I!)
F) need to be re-tucked because their blankets fell off
G) need help finding Prickles or King Mooey or Limbo Ducky.
H) have a runny nose or a tickle in their throat
I) have an itchy toe
J) the cat is under their bed
K) the cat is not under their bed
L) it's windy out
M) the  moon is too bright
N) the night light is not bright enough
O) they are thinking about a recent scary episode of some TV show
P) they need an extra hug

But usually around 9:30 they are finally all tucked in and snoozing. That leaves me about, oh, 10 minutes or so before I'm too exhausted to do anything but stumble up to bed.

Cursing and Swearing and Having a Grand Ol' Time!

So, I'm designing a web site. It's been a little over a year since I did one. I used to do that at my previous job - design web applications for the company using Lotus Notes and then later using Java on a JBoss server. I absolutely loved it! Granted I was developing corporate web applications, and not complete web sites, but much of it was the same - finding graphics, picking colors, designing layouts, setting up security, fighting over css issues due to browser differences, front-end coding and back-end coding, cursing and swearing and having a grand ol' time!

I started out my college career as a graphics arts major and sometimes I wish I never switched to business. I love the creativity involved with designing for the web - the messing with the layouts, the colors, the links and the relatively simple, but sometimes utterly frustrating code involved. It feels great to be doing this again after a year off. I've been working on it in my spare time (of which I have very little) over the last month. I've managed to get my PC set up with Java, Eclipse, Apache, PHP, Tomcat, Gimp and Filezilla (and get them all working). I've managed to remember most of what I used to know, learned the basics of PHP and learned a LOT more about Gimp (an awesome free graphics program for those who aren't willing to shell out mega bucks for Photoshop). Once this project wraps up I may have to create myself a website. If for no other reason than I really like messing with this stuff.

By the time this post is posted it should be live. Check it out and let me know what you think: Five Star Martial Arts.
